The serial to RJ50 cable that connects directly to the back of the UPS main unit is part number 940-0625A. The serial to 2.5 mm barrel Jack that connects to the NMC is part number 940-0299A.
If you intend to upgrade the NMC firmware you can do so using the USB, Serial, Ethernet ports on the NMC.
If however you intend to upgrade the actual UPS firmware do so only with the supplied APC serial to RJ50 proprietary cable or make your own that you have validated to work! ☝️
If the UPS is under APC WARRANTY only upgrade the UPS Firmware while speaking live (over the phone) with a APC Technical Support personnel!
If anything’s should go wrong they can assist in a break fix or RMA.
If the hardware is out of APC WARRANTY you have a more than 50% chance of bricking the unit! 🤦♂️👎
If you’re an outside support vendor I encourage you to make this crystal clear to the end client. If they insist on the firmware upgrade have them sign a waver for possible fault.
You’ll want to have a properly configured laptop present and connected directly to the UPS.
All connected loads from the UPS should be removed (regardless) of what the APC documents says if the UPS firmware is being updated.
The NMC firmware can be updated without disconnecting the loads if that is what you intended to do. 👍
