SMT2200C, Replaced Batteries, Red Flashing Battery Light

I have an SMT2200C, purchased in 2018 that’s giving me trouble.

I let it sit unused for a while, and the batteries died. I replaced all four with the appropriate model, ordered from Amazon and “certified” to work with this device. All four were at close to peak voltage on arrival. Hooked everything up the way I found it.

Now, I have no Battery related display of any kind (all battery related menus just show null) and the Replace Battery light is flashing red- along with the Connect Battery message showing intermittently.

every couple hours, I can hear clicking and clacking inside the case- and can also see a “ Battery Replaced?” Message very briefly appear- but before I have time to conform, it goes away. Sometimes it will also briefly show a mid-percentage of battery life, but that also immediately goes away.

it makes me feel like there’s a loose connection or the plastic housed terminals inside aren’t tightly secured.

either way, I am unable to do any self tests- the machine doesn’t see a battery and this won’t allow any. I also cannot update FW (I am using really old FW, I’m sure an update would help) because on the online portal you can’t initiate a FW update with the Battery state flag.

I'm sure this device is out of warranty, but I spent a lot on it, and now more with the battery replacements- I’d really like to get this device back online. I’ve done a ton of troubleshooting found here and various other online sources, and after several frustrating nights I humbly request the experts assistance.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sorry for the delay, here are the pictures.

the cells were four individual direct from Amazon and I wired everything exactly as I found it, using pictures of the wiring for reference just to be double sure.

I tested each unit with a multimeter to verify I didn’t have any dead cells.

Complete a brain dead procedure (twice) using the following APC Resource Link for the SMX Series UPS:

https://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156611/

Report the behaviour and results here. If the brain dead restores the system to working state - move on.

If however, the brain dead procedure does not resolve the issue perform the following and report back the results.

Fuse: Remove the fuse and measure the continuity & resistance of the fuse. Insure you wiggle the fuse to validate it’s not cracked. If there is any corrosion remove it and clean.

Battery Connected: Measure the battery cartridge voltage (before) it’s connected to the system and document and report back the value. Connect the battery cartridge to the system while it’s connected to AC Mains and powered up.

Does the system begin to charge the battery cartridge?!? If so what is the voltage at the battery connector?!?

If the battery voltage does not increase report this back.

Battery Not Connected: If the battery was being charged by the system proceed with the following:

Disconnect the battery cartridge and measure the voltage and document. Allow the battery cartridge to sit for 72 hours and than measure & document the voltage and report back the readings.

A brand new and healthy 12 VDC battery that is 100% charged will have a resting voltage depending upon temperature a voltage level of 12.8X ~ 12.9X VDC. It will not drop any voltage during the 72 hour period.

Normal voltage drop (self discharge) depending upon environmental temperature is 0.1 VDC.

If the fuse and battery check out based on the above reconnect it back to the system. Set your True RMS Multimeter to AC Volts and insert the probes to one of the outputs.

Power on the unit and report back the AC Voltage at the outputs the meter is connected to.

NOTE: If the system is connected to a computer running Power Chute Software provide the following logs: Event, Data, UPS.

On the LCD scroll to the logs and report back the last ten faults / error codes.
