SEEK ASISTANCE WITH INSTALL OF REPLACEMENT BX900R (BACK-UDP XS 900VA)

This was originally posted on APC forums on 8/28/2010

Hello,

I have just received a replacement Back-UPS 900 (the original one never achieved a status of charged). The original unit is still connected to my computer.

My question is about charging the new unit. Do I need to connect the new unit to my computer and related peripherals to charge it for the recommended 18 hours?
Or, can I charge the battery in the new unit by simply plugging the new unit into an outlet without connecting it to the computer and connecting it to my computer after it has charged?

And , if I have to connect the new unit to computer and related peripherals to charge it, should I not use the computer for the recommended 18 hour charging time? I have seen conflicting information about using the computer while the battery is charging.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
