SAU1500 will not charge batteries - AC power is not passed through.

Hi I have an SAU1500 that will not charge old or new batteries. It beeps when you push the ON switch. I have charged the batteries in another UPS and installed them back in this UPS and then it will test the batteries and run in backup mode until the batteries are dead.

Is there a fuse or something I could check or replace?

This condition happened during a load test.

The SUA1500 is relatively simply in its AC power path. I'd check the obvious stuff first.

1. Test the outlet feeding the UPS with a known working lamp.

2. Make sure the white button on the back of your UPS didn't pop out http://www.apcmedia.com/resource/images/500/Back/53D48A24-5056-9170-D3E47E75AF003395_pr.jpg

The integral circuit breaker is connected in series with the hot and when it pops, it interrupts the input power path.
There aren't many components to go bad in the AC path. When the UPS is not on inverter, the power is directly fed through relays.

The autotransformer is transparent to the load under normal line conditions, but it has two additional taps that provides 0.88x and 1.12x of line voltage and the relays mechanically switch to one of these taps under abnormal line conditions and you would know when this is happening by the status LED on the front panel.

Because it runs fine on battery, you automatically know the transformer is fine. Since the relays appear to be making a proper transfer on the 120v side, they're like fine too.

After checking the above two check points, check the input power path. If this checks out fine, then the problem is in one of the relays or the control circuit. From there, you can transplant the relay from salvage UPSs, but if it's the board, I usually consider it a total loss.

Remove battery, charge up and save as a spare. Charge it up every 6 months. Trade the dead chassis in to TradeUPS or just get a new one.

If I am understanding correctly, your UPS will only turn on to battery power? What is the chance that its not plugged into a good power source? Can you test the current power source with a voltmeter, or perhaps plug this UPS into the same exact power outlet that your other UPS is plugged into? If you have a management card or management software with the troubled UPS, you may be able to log in and find out what is happening by reviewing the log files.

I have tested the power with a volt meter, I remover the cover and tested the line voltage through the circuit breaker.

The software says "discharging"

There is never a online led.

Hello,

We do not provide any info about internal components that may be able to be repaired in the our units. For out of warranty repairs, try Coastal Business Machines (888-234-9877)

Thanks.
