I have a Back-UPS RS 800 that I bought in Nov 2008 (almost 7 years old). It has always worked great, up until a month or so ago. It bagan clicking back and forth between battery power and AC power, which it reported (via Powerchute) as electrical noise events. I increased the high and low voltages to get the maximum spread, i.e. lowest sensitivity. Another UPS used in its place does not exhibit this behavior. I swapped batteries with no change in behavior. It maintains the same behavior when plugged into a different outlet, regardless of whether it has a load or not. It recently got up to over a hundred events per day. Is that a typical failure signature? Should I just write it off as dead, or is there some way to salvage it?

Hi Larry,
From your troubleshooting done so far, it sounds like the UPS may be experiencing internal issues. I would suggest a braindead procedure:
1)Unplug the unit
2)Unplug the load
3)Unplug the battery
4)Hold the power off button for 20 seconds
5)Reconnect everything and power the unit back on
If this reset of the unit fixes the issue - fantastic. Otherwise I would recommend replacing this 7 year old unit that is exhibiting behavior other units do not in the same environment.

Thanks Jordan. I tried your braindead procedure....No luck. So now I've got a big paperweight with new batteries.
