My Pro BR1500S is displaying a F02 error code at power up. F02 on-Battery Output Short. Nothing is plugged into the back of the UPS when this error code occurs. My UPS and battery are 5-years old. Could this fault be due to a defective battery or an internal fault of the UPS?

The F02 error code typically indicates one or more connected loads is shorted. Given there is nothing connected at the rear as you say.
This does indicate a hardware failure of the UPS.
You can replace the internal battery and reset the battery installation date via the APC Power Chute Software. To see if that makes any difference in the how the unit behaves.
