Or maybe APC can just add this functionality. It never ceases to amaze me how many enterprise level things don't allow for a secure smtp server.

I suppose I will just stop buying this stuff and start buying things from people that actually keep their software up to date.

Sorry for the rant....just really frustrating. Both of my ISP require secure smtp and I'm into APC thousands of dollars and now I have to go find a friggen free smtp server to rely on?

Write some code APC or lose a customer.

There is no solution within PowerChute Business Edition. You would need an email account that does not require authorization.

I ended up purchasing 1st SMTP server http://www.emailarms.com/products/1st_smtp.html for my workstation. I direct powerchute to the localhost and forward the email to my email address.

I agree, it's ridiculous it can't even authenticate without ssl, it should have a fully functional smtp client embedded. Now we customer must buy a smtp software apart to make it work ??

I am in the middle of installing the software on my computer so that it will email me when the power goes out.

Can you help me with the following pieces of info?
SMTP Mail Server address: ?
SMTP User Name: ?
Destination email: ------------@gmail.com

I was told I need an email system that does not need a password. I really have no idea how do get one. The APC customer service was no help at all.

The SMTP information is for customers who have an SMTP server. If you're trying to notify a Gmail account without one, it's going to be tough to come by unless you find a free web SMTP service.

It might be tough to notify to a gmail account, but the general process goes like this:

1) Find the mail exchange server for the recipient.

>
vger:~ voidstar$ dig mx gmail.com

; <<>> DiG 9.4.1-P1 <<>> mx gmail.com
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:

These are the servers gmail uses to accept mail via SNMP... so for example you could use gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com. However, while their SNMP servers accept mail without needing a username and password, they also implement rules to cut down on spam. For example:

>
220 mx.google.com ESMTP j10si664328muh.1
HELO apc.com
250 mx.google.com at your service
mail from:
250 2.1.0 OK
rcpt to:
250 2.1.5 OK
data
354 Go ahead
Hello, this is a email.
.
550-5.7.1 [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] The IP you're using to send mail is not authorized
550-5.7.1 to send email directly to our servers. Please use the SMTP
550-5.7.1 relay at your service provider instead. Learn more at

It's too bad spam makes it difficult to send legitimate emails.

In a corporate environment, you would use the business' email servers for this purposes.
