The instructions in my new 1500 UPS states not to place a computer monitor within 30 cm of the UPS. Can the computer box itself be placed right next to the UPS or should this be avoided as well?

I've had mine shoved up against the edge of my desk for awhile, but it operates fine. Higher temperatures will just wear out your battery faster, so if it gets hot down there, make sure you don't ignore any "replace battery" alarms.
Could I please see where the 2U recommendation is documented? As far as I know, the rackmount units have fans on the back so space above/below shouldn't really matter... That would seem pretty counter-intuitive.

It doesn't really matter these days. The warning was when CRTs were in common use. CRTs are very sensitive to magnetic field produced by the transformer within the UPS and caused wobbly image.

APC recommend a 65 to 70 degree environment as well as adequate room to ventilate. For rack-mounted units, APC recommend 2U in space above and below the units for adequate airflow. For stand-alone units, APC recommend at least four inches on all sides (except the bottom) for adequate airflow around the unit.
