Hi,
I just purchased a Back UPS XS 1300 and I'm trying to install it right now.
Hooked everything up as indicated in the installation and operation manual, and powered on the PC connected to it. Then it said to go to www.apc.com/tools/download and download PowerChute Personal Edition. Well, there was no Personal Edition - only a Business one.
So can anyone tell me where to download this Personal Edition? And, do I really need it? Will the backup unit power the PC without this software? Why do I need software?
Many thanks!
Caroline

OK, thanks. However, are you saying that unless I install PowerChute I can't shut down my computer normally in the event of a power failure?

Hello Caroline,
The UPS can work fine without Power Chute software. APC Power Chute Personal Edition is mainly used to shutdown the Computer gracefully in the event of extended power failure. It also allows users to monitor the UPS status such as runtime, status of the UPS, battery capacity, configuration of the UPS sensitivity etc.,
If you want to shutdown your Computer gracefully and require UPS monitoring, then you can install the PCPE software on your Computer. You have to attache the supplied RJ45 to USB cable between the UPS and Computer in order for the PCPE software to communicate with the UPS. Its very easy to install the PCPE software. Click here to download the PCPE software.

Caroline,
In addition to what Techie has provided please make sure that PCPE supports your Operating System. To see all the compatible OS please see the [APC PowerChute Personal Edition Compatibility Chart|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/JNOE-7GSAQJ_R7_EN.pdf].

Even without an APC software you can still gracefully shutdown your PC in the event of a power failure but you need to make sure that it supports the Native shutdown software. Like for Microsoft, it is using what we call as Power Options and for Macintosh it is Energy Saver.
Using the PCPE (PowerChute Personal Edition) gives a user more control with our UPS such as voltage threshold settings, sensitivity adjustments, power problem history and many more.
