I bought my APC BR1500MS six years ago, and a replacement RBC163 battery at approximately the same time, and it had remained in its box, unopened until now. When I just replaced the original battery with the new one, it shows only a 24% charge. Is this normal? I couldn't find anything in the documentation about the need to charge the replacement battery before putting the UPS into service. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If the new battery sat for six years without being charged it’s highly likely damaged and needs to be replaced. ☹️
You can leave the new battery connected to the system and let it charge for the next week to see what happens.
You’ll want to update the battery installation date via Power Chute if available. Once that has been done verify the battery indicates a SOC (State of Charge) of 100%.
If so manually initiate a Self Test via Power Chute Software. What are the results of this test?!?
If it fails replace the battery cartridge. If it passes than wait for the battery to return to 100% SOC.
Once the battery is 100% manually initiate a battery calibration via Power Chute Software with at least 30% attached load.
Let the process complete and battery recharge back to 100% SOC. If the battery calibration fails at any point - replace! ☝️
If the process completes than the operational runtime will be more accurate and reflect the performance / runtime available based on the current attached load.
Ultimately, this battery will need to be replaced at some point.

Thank you, Teken. I am running a Mac, and Power Chute is no longer used with the MacOS. Is there another way to run the tests you suggested? Thanks.
