I just purchased a BE 550G and after charging for 24 hours, the unit is not working properly. When unplugged, the unit emits the correct status indicators (i.e. green light and 4 beeps every 30 seconds), but all of the components that are plugged into the battery backup outlets shut down immediately. Is there a setting that I'm missing or is this unit defective?

In that case it does sound like there's a problem. As it is a new unit you should contact either the seller or APC for a warranty replacement.

Are you using only the outlets labeled "Battery Backup / Surge Protection"? Some of the outlets are labeled "Surge Protection" only and are not powered by the batteries during a power failure. See page 1 of the manual here.
Another possibility is that your devices require a pure sine wave from the UPS instead of the step-approximated one that this model provides. Normally that is indicated by a buzzing or other complaints from the connected equipment, not a complete loss of power.
You can check for basic functionality by plugging a table lamp or similar into one of the backup outlets, unplugging all other devices from the outlets, and doing a "pull the plug" test on the UPS. The lamp should remain on at a similar brightness level.

Hi. Yes, I am using the outlets labeled "Battery Backup / Surge Protection". I don't have any buzzing from the connected equipment - just a complete loss of power. I just tested the unit with a night light and it lost power as well.
