Needin advise on custumized second hand UPS

Hello every one. I recently bought a " Back-UPS ES 650" with it was a modifyed Smart-UPS XL 24V Battery Pack rewired to put out 12V. this was wired to run the UPS, the cabal was fairly professional quality.
My question is.
Would this setup be likely to damage the the UPS I bought. It is working as is now.
Thanks for any advice.

Is it able to charge up to and maintain 13.6-13.8v? If not, the battery may not last as long as it could.

Upon reading the fist reply, I wounder if putting an inteligent batt charger/maintainer on the batt pack would help protect the chargin circuit. Or would that damage the UPS?
There is no Warrenty on the unit. I jsut usin it on an offsite as a back up fer generator so there no Electrical codes to worry about.

Hello,

Although doing this is completely unsupported by APC and most likely voids your warranty, it could potentially "work" but perhaps not up to the performance you are looking for.

Several things to keep in mind:
- Because the UPS does a runtime/time calculation during self tests, and is expecting a much smaller battery in amp hours, runtime calculations could be off.
- For the same reason, the replace battery indicator may not/ will not function correctly. My personal advice is to check the battery manually every 3-6 months
- The recharge of the much larger battery string will put stain on the charging circuit (in this unit, the charger is only rated at 7W). Depending on the total amp/hour of the battery string, it could take the charger days to get back up to 100%. If I were to guess, this is where you might see a hardware failure.
- By doing this you void APC warranty, possible electric codes, and equipment protection policies etc, etc.

With all of this in mind, and in my professional opinion, if you are looking for extra runtime your safest bet is to either purchase the correct smart-ups to support the battery pack you have, or get a whole new UPS that supports an external battery.

I would imagine that would take some of the strain off the internal charger. But again, it sounds like that this setup is turning into a pretty expensive "unsupported" option. You might want to weigh in the cost of getting this to work (maybe) vs. a new UPS sized appropriately. Of course this is completely up to you!
