Can I use my BackUPS with a 3-to-2 prong adaptor? My wife wants to move our office from the first floor (with 3-prong plugs and Romex wiring) to the 2nd floor (2-prong plugs with knob and tube wiring). If the 3rd prong is needed, could I run a ground strap to my metal radiators?

The UPS can be used without a ground, but the APC equipment protection policy would be void. The unit needs a valid ground in order to have a proper outlet for excess voltage.
In the event of a surge or other power event the unit will still try as best to protect your equipment, but if the ground isn't valid there may be issues in it behaving as designed.
