Durning a recent power outage my ES-500 ran for a few minutes and then began emitting a constant tone. I shut down my computer and peripherals and unplugged everything and turned off the ES-500 and the eeeeeeeeeeee noise stopped.
Before turning it off and unplugging I noted that the (normally green) power lite was OUT.
I waited a few minutes after the power came back on and plugged it back in and turned it on. After just a short time of what appeared to be normal operation (Green Lite on) the eeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise started again. OBSERVATION: Before the eeeeeeeeeeeeee noise, the green power lite is on. Once the noise started... NO LIGHT at all! No reset popped out to reset. Having no spare battery I visited our local battery shop in town and purchased a new battery. This about the third battery for this UPS unit. Even with the new battery it still makes the same single screeching tone ( I timed it) after having been turned on for about seven seconds. I pulled the battery back out and put in the old one and same thing. When I put the new battery back in, this time there's a constant screeching tone INSTANTLY and something inside STINKS! Having been an electronics tech in the military, I know that's not a good sign!
I observed the warnings on the box. I unplugged the UPS from the wall. Battery is out. I opened the box and the heat sinks for the two transistors or rectifiers ( I did not pursue which) were still hot as a could be! Enough to be still uncomfortable to the touch and not what I would assume to be normal. This is also where the STINK comes from the greatest.
It's all back together. No battery in it. Is there any trade in value for the box and the big transformer? Please advise.
David

i'd start here -> http://www.apc.com/recycle/
you can still trade that unit in if it does not work and get some credit towards a new UPS if you want one or try to recycle the unit.
