Re the outlets on the UPS's - does each one have to be connected directly to a device , or can the devices be connected to a multi-plug adaptor ,
which in turn is connected to the UPS outlet ?
This would enable connecting more devices to the UPS , if there aren't enough outlets .
Thanks .

correct, a Rack PDU is designed to give you more outlets and properly distribute power. just keep in mind that even though you may have more outlets, you need to keep an eye on your UPS capacity.

I understand the answer to be no for a regular "power strip" - but an APC PDU , which is a more elaborate type of "power strip" is OK ?
