Motor on a UPS

I have gotten different answers depending on who I talk to.

Can I put a motor load on an APC UPS? I heard it is possible if the UPS is sized based on the Locked Rotor current of the motor, which is huge! Is there a rule of thumb for sizing a UPS for this application?
