Master Control not working

First of all I have no idea what I am doing, so I hope someone will take the time to explain this in simple terms.
I just purchased the APC Backup ES. I have the battery inserted correctly, but there is no power in the master control outlets.
I know that I am not doing something correctly, and am hoping someone will take the time to help me!

Just to make sure the UPS power cord is plugged into the wall power outlet as well?
