Just unpacked brand new J10, connected battery, installed bezel and plugged into AC. Powered on and Self Test reported all systems go. Waited a few hours for 100% battery charge and then reached for my meter to check voltage fluctuation on switch-to-battery.
You can imagine my surprise and disappointment when I found NO POWER TO ANY OUTLETS when running on battery. Unit appears to be functioning normally – display on and informing me I’m running on battery, Battery LED lit, etc. Just no juice at the outlets.
Is this a defective unit or am I missing something?
** Update (09/24/11 20:50 EDT): I reset to factory defaults and now have a different problem. All outlets now output 89.2 VAC. Better than the nominal millivolts registered previously, but still outside of normal operating range.

its a difference between a true RMS voltmeter and not true RMS. usually voltmeters specify true RMS or not.
here is an article we have on this-> http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1493

I would let it charge overnight. Then plug in something like a 100W light. To test the UPS switch off the breaker that feeds the outlet the UPS is plugged into and see if your light stays on and if the voltage is steady. Make sure you are using a RMS multimeter also.

Thanks for the response – much appreciated. I’m going to let it charge a full 36 before my next evaluation. The 100%-charged declared on the display seemed unlikely after only a few hours of juice, so perhaps that’s the problem, although I’d expect more accurate status evaluation from APC. FWIW, I’m using a Fluke 79 and have no reason to doubt its accuracy.
I’ll post my findings (and APC’s response) tomorrow.
