Issue with APC Back-UPS Standby UPS BE850G2-UK

My UPS does not seem to function properly, the event log states the following continuously, every day, every few minutes:

6/5/24 22:09:29 Battery Charge in Range
6/5/24 21:44:15 Output Load in Range
6/5/24 21:44:12 Output Load Threshold Exceeded
6/5/24 21:42:39 Battery Discharged
6/5/24 21:41:56 Battery Charge in Range
6/5/24 21:17:51 Battery Discharged
6/5/24 21:17:36 Battery Charge in Range
6/5/24 21:16:39 Battery Discharged

What does this 'Battery Discharged' event mean?

We are not getting continuous power outages or any mains power issues.

I even had a controlled shut down happen on my, while using the PC, with no mains power issues happening, as follows:

5/30/24 17:38:56 https://www.apc.com/pcss
5/30/24 17:37:59 Communication Established
5/30/24 17:37:56 Monitoring Started
5/30/24 17:36:48 Monitoring Stopped
5/30/24 17:30:27 User Logged On
5/30/24 17:28:42 https://www.apc.com/pcss
5/30/24 17:27:44 Communication Established
5/30/24 17:27:42 Monitoring Started
5/30/24 17:23:30 Monitoring Stopped
5/30/24 17:23:28 Main Outlet Group commanded to: shutdown using delay
5/30/24 17:23:28 Shutdown process started
5/30/24 17:23:28 Low Battery
5/30/24 17:23:28 On Battery
5/30/24 17:21:36 Battery Discharged
5/30/24 17:21:35 Battery Charge in Range

Thanks in advance

Based on only the event logs provided by you this is what it means.

- Power Quality: Based on the event logs the system determined the input voltage, frequency, THD, was not acceptable. As such the system went into battery only mode.

The power quality / condition lasted much longer than the UPS battery could sustain and thus initiated a soft graceful shutdown via PCSS.

The other two events indicate the battery charging state when the battery was depleted and was recharged. Once fully charged the system indicated it was in range or fully charged.

The last event indicates at some point the connected load was above what the system could sustain. If you provide the data logs which show the same time period of the event logs you have provided here I can expand on this explanation if you like.

The data logs are those that indicate the input / output voltage, frequency, battery capacity, charging level, battery voltage, etc.

Let me know if this answered your question if not please do ask. If the information provided did answer your query please do mark this as resolved and mark this reply as a solution.

As this will help the next person asking the same. 👍

Cheers! 🍺

NOTE: You may change the sensitivity of the unit by following the user guide provided here in page 14. Set the sensitivity from med (default) to low.

Thanks for the info, please see the full log attached, if this helps.

Strangely, when it ran through the controlled shutdown, after restart, the battery was showing at 80% charged, not flat.

How old is this unit and internal battery? The average service life of the battery is 2-5 years based on usage, temperature, power quality, and environmental conditions.

The cells can endure 260 full depletions as it shows battery health issues. If we assume the battery is not healthy you can test this out now and report back what happens.

Remove the USB cable that connects to the UPS and keep your computer off. Attach a few loads that won’t be harmed if the UPS does a hard shutdown.

Disconnect the AC Mains from the wall outlet. Use something to track how long the unit operates for until it completely shutdown.

Please report back what you see and observe doing this grid down / lights out test. Lastly, is there no data logs that show the input / output voltage, frequency, power, battery voltage, battery capacity etc?!?

The UPS was purchased new and installed Jan 2024.

There does not appear to be a way to extract the Data Log, in the same way as you can for the Event Log, however please find attached a screen grab of the most recent Data Log entries.

Many thanks.

Appreciate you taking the time to offer the image capture. When time permits simulate a grid down event / lights out by removing AC Mains from the wall.

Time how long the unit operates for with a steady 30% load until it automatically shuts down. Let the unit recharge the internal battery and review the event / data logs to see if there is a change in operating behaviour. 👍

In the interim I would reach out to APC Technical Support to request insight about your unit.

They may very well initiate a RMA for the unit because the event logs aren’t normal as it relates to the endless battery charge events.

NOTE: I have appended the full users manual for this unit. On page 14 please change the sensitivity to (Green) to allow a higher input voltage. The unit may be going into battery only mode as the input voltage is too high. Based on your data logs the input voltage is 250+ VAC.

Is your location 220, 230, 240 VAC? If 220 / 230 VAC I could see the unit constantly going into battery only mode. ☹️

Okay, thanks. It's the UK, so 230 VAC, or generally 230 volts -6%, +10%

Appreciate the confirmation your input voltage is 230 VAC. Would you kindly make the change as outlined in the user manual to a less sensitive voltage range.

Please do report back what you see and observe in both the event / data logs. APC Technical Support would have asked you to make this specific change as part of the troubleshooting process. 👍

Cheers! 🍺
