I used a sim sinewave UPS on a cheeper Sony TV so when I play games I can save and turn them off or when I come back from like lunch it will still be going and i wont lose my spot and it seem to have died a quicker death My sony xbr960 I do not even want to risk it. I only need it to power the TV for like 9 minutes at max to ride out quick power outages or finish what parts of the games I am on.
I guess it is safe for game consoles because they are just Tiny PCs and this is a PC UPS the tube is what I am worried about hurting the most.
it is what is called a step wave.... I also have a simulated sinewave one but can not find the model number it had stickers over it and i cant get all of it off to read it numbers. My new ones are real sine wave output but i use them on PCs.
unless it is safer to use it just on surge only..

Good day Cube,
Can you tell us what the part number is of the APC UPS that's hanging around? You can get the part number from the white sticker with bar codes usually at the bottom or at the back of the UPS. Have you tried to get in touch with Sony to find out if the power requirements of your hdtv?

I have a Sony XBR9 40" LCD flat screen on a small, 750VA, APC UPS with a stepped approximation of a sine wave output. The TV operates "almost" OK as there is a slight "hum" in the audio output probably due to the distortion on the UPS output. The picture, however, is fine. My situation and experience causes me to believe it will NOT cause a problem long term as the commercial power in my area is pretty stable so the TV is not on the UPS that often.
