Does anyone know what communictions code APC uses on some of the smaller UPS?

Depends on the model.
Units that specifies the 940-0024C cable uses simple serial communication and we call it "Smart Protocol" however, I'm not sure if thats the phrase APC-MGE use officially. Do a bit of searching on the net and you'll find them. The forums' ToS doesn't allow me to discuss the contents or directly link you to it. Only thing I recommend is that avoid sending the character "1" and you're pretty much safe from firmware corruption.

Units before Smart Protocol days used simple electrical open collector signaling and the pin-out should be available in older APC (early 90s) manual which is available on APC site. Look for BK400, BK650, etc.
