I know that's a vague question, but I'm new to the battery backup world and was wondering how long they run and if you can control how long they run after a power outage? I see charts that give different run times depending on the wattages, so am I able to set a specific wattage on them?
This one in particular:

Hi Crabman7975,
The runtime that a UPS can provide will actually depend on how much wattage the attached loads will draw. More load, less runtime.
Using the runtime chart on this link, under Runtime Graph, as you move your cursor towards the right side(with high Load in watts) the runtime decreases.
Customers who uses an APC UPS is advised to install a software which we call PowerChute Personal Edition. This will allow you to monitor your UPS, it's status and thru the software, you can also configure how the UPS will react when there's power disturbance.
I hope this gives you an idea.

I saw the PowerChute software and think it would be useful. However, the equipment that is connected to the backup unit is a phone system and routers/switches. How could I monitor with the software if a computer is not connected to the backup unit? Would I install it on a laptop and connect it whenever I needed to use the software?

Hi,
At the back of our Back-UPS product you'll find a slot that we call as Data Port. You will be connecting an RJ-45 looking connector/cable on this end and on the other end it is a USB connector which you will then connect to a PC or Laptop. Even if the PC/Laptop is not drawing power from the UPS but the Data Cable is connected, you should be able to get details.
If you are not planning to do this, might as well try our newer BackUPS Pro LCD series. They do have an LCD screen that displays information such as load and battery capacity, estimated runtime, input/output voltage and etc.
Should you need more information about the newer BackUPS Pro LCD please click here - [Back-UPS Pro|http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=27]
