How do I know if an APC surge protector and back up battery has a dead battery

Dead as in out of charge or dead as in needs to be replaced.

If it needs to be replaced an LED or warning message will appear on the UPS, generally its a picture of a battery with an X in it.

Dead as the battery side of the APC doesn't give juice to other equipment.
