Hello,
I have a lot of clients asking for recommendations on a UPS for their home office. Some of them even want an option for an expansion battery pack. I've always bought UPS but a common complaint I get - which I 100% agree with is the noise of the units when they are recharging. I see some other brands with nearly silent UPS units with no fans.
Does APC have something new or in the works or should I just switch brands? I've worked for a lot of companies that use other brands and I'm OK with it, I just always replace them as years pass as I originally knew APC but I don't want to miss an opportunity.

All APC UPS models above 1 KVA have an internal fan to help manage heat dissipation with some exceptions listed below.
All APC double conversion (On Line) systems such as the SRT Series the fan runs continuously at low speed and increases in RPM when specific conditions occur.
Line Interactive models such as the SMT, SMX Series the fan only comes on when specific defined conditions are met / present.
As such, 99% of the time the unit is very quiet in normal operations. The fan will come on during a grid down / lights out event, charging, high load, increased ambient internal temperature.
None of the above systems are intended to be installed next to a person who doesn’t understand why a fan exists or is required! 🤦♂️
Depending on the region and time of purchase you’ll find a SMT1000 has no internal fan. As such this would be as quiet as you’ll ever find in the Smart-UPS Series.
As stated up above both SMT1500 / SMX1500 (1.5 KVA) the internal fan doesn’t run unless a defined condition exists as such both systems are for all intended purposes - quiet.
The SMX Series is capable of extended battery packs. Neither the SMC / SMT support extended battery packs.
SMC Series doesn’t support a Smart Slot for the NMC (Network Management Card) like the SMT / SMX Series.
NOTE: All current Smart-UPS Series have been updated with firmware to better manage when the internal fan comes on and at what speed.
As such it’s imperative to validate what UPS Firmware is present to take advantage of this feature enhancement. If noise pollution is a concern for the end client(s).
