Expanded batteries in our SmartUPS2200

Brand new here, and have a question. We have a Smart UPS2200 that has vintage 2006 batteries. In trying to remove these, it appears they have expanded in the chassis and in fact will not slide out normally. This is the 1st time I've ever seen this, and I'm thinking the charger may have gone berserk. Up unitl this, the unit tested fine, and seemed to be holding a charge. However, over the weekend the unit tripped the breaker it is on and discharged batteries until it simply shut down. It "appears" to have recharged the batteries, but now this.
Any thoughts?

are you able to remove the batteries at all or at least disengage the connector on them to stop them from charging more? if they cool down a bit and aren't charging any more, after several hours you may be able to get them out. you can cool them a bit faster with a fan or something but the big thing is to make sure they arent continuing to charge.

if the batteries are six years old, something may have gone wrong that the UPS could not have prevented or detected with this type of battery technology. batteries generally last 3-5 years so to me, this is something that doesnt totally shock me but i also understand your concern regarding no notice on this.
