Hey all,
I have a brand new Back-UPS ES 650 that has a problem. One or two times per week it will make a click/pop noise, cut all power to anything plugged into it, then a couple of seconds later power back up. When it does this everything loses power, even stuff plugged into the 'battery back-up' outlets. During these times the power to the rest of the house is fine, so it's not an power surge/outage. I unplugged the UPS and tried plugging something into a back-up outlet and it worked, so I know the battery is hooked up and working. I don't have it hooked to my PC with the RJ45-USB cable, and I'm not using the power software that came with it. Any idea what the deal with this is?
Thanks,
V

Thanks for the update. If possible, could you please reconnect the Computer to the UPS? And then install Power Chute Personal Edition software on your Computer so that the Computer will be shutdown gracefully in the event of power failure or when the UPS reaches a low battery condition on battery mode.
And also the PCPE software will provide the UPS status information which will be useful to find out a root cause of this issue.
Please have a look at the this [K-base document|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=20] which discusses about this issue. I hope that this helps.

Welcome to APC Forum V.
What is the exact model and serial number of your UPS? Our UPS does have a self-test feature to test the integrity of the battery, this occurs every 14 days from the day it was las turned ON. Also, would it be possible for you to pull the plug of your UPS while it is Online and let me know if it will transfer to OnBattery?

Hey,
Sorry it took so long to respond. The model / serial number of my unit is BE650G / 3B0825X71664.
I plugged the UPS in to an electrical outlet and plugged a light into a battery backup socket. The light worked. I then left the light on and unplugged the UPS. The light stayed on and the UPS beeped four times. That tells me that the battery is hooked up properly and that the unit is working. But I still can't figure out why it was cutting out intermittently.
I haven't used the unit since I verified that it was cutting out, but I've kept it plugged in to keep the battery charged.

You are welcome V.
Please try to use the UPS for us to see or at least have an idea if the problem comes back again.

JR,
I hope that you are doing well. Let me collect some more information from you to determine what is going on with the unit. What was plugged into the UPS battery backup outlets before the unit shut down itself? Was the equipment directly plugged to the UPS outlet or through Power Strip? Is the UPS attached to the wall directly? Was there any audible indication from the unit after it shutdown?

Okay, sorry for being away. Had eye surgery.
The unit IS cutting out. The reason I unplugged everything from it in the first place is because it cut out while I was sitting there using the computer. Any idea what this could be?
Also, and identical unit was purchased at the same time as this one by my brother-in-law. He hasn't had any problems.

The UPS was plugged directly into the wall outlet. The following were plugged into the battery backup outlets; computer tower, monitor, possibly computer speakers. When the unit cut out, there was a fairly loud click or pop, the power went out to the devices plugged into it, then it came back on. There were no beeps from the unit itself, just the click/pop noise. Prior to me witnessing this, I had found my computer "rebooted" during periods when I was away (I leave my computer on most of the time). The first time I thought it was because some software had updated and restarted the system, but after the second time a few days later I knew something was up. Normally I would blame it on a power outage, but since I had the UPS on it I didn't think that could be the cause.
Again, my brother-in-law purchased the exact same model UPS at the same time I did, and his is working fine. Maybe this one was built on an native american burial ground? UPS cemetary? Who knows. I appreciate your helping me out with this.
