Changed the battery on this ES500 (routine for all units). Now when I hold the on button down, the green lite comes on, after a few seconds it clicks, but no matter when I let the button up the green lite goes off and the UPS outlets go dead. Any suggestions? Thanks!

JonPro,
The model is BE500U and the serial number is JB0337023919. I am not sure whether this is the first or second time I have replaced the battery. The old battery is fine but I try to replace the UPS batteries before they die. This one is lightly loaded - a router, a switch, and a wireless hub for the home network. Yesterday on the bench I turned the unit on with the AC plug pulled and it came right on. I plugged it in and added a light bulb load and it worked fine. I turned it off (big mistake) and carried it back to its normal shelf. Now it will not stay on whether or not the AC plug is pulled, with or without any load. The unit has probably not been turned off before this for several years, although it gets an operational check every month when I turn the mains off to check the standby generator operation. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Can you provide the exact model number of the UPS? This can be found on a small white barcode sticker located underneath the UPS.

Thanks for the update.
The problem now is that the unit would not turn on anymore even if it is plugged or unplugged from the power source. Have you tried reseating the battery terminals? Let us see if the unit can be cold started. To coldstart the UPS it needs to be turned off and unplugged from the wall outlet/power source. Press and hold the power button, the unit will emit a short and a long beep. Release the power button as soon as you hear the long beep, if this is done correctly the unit should power on using the battery.
If you cannot hear anything coming from the unit and have verified that all connectors are fine, the unit have died already.

I have tried reseating the battery terminals. With the unit unplugged I get one short beep when I first push the button down and then no more additional beeps no matter how long I hold it down. When the unit did power up yesterday it worked just fine with Power Chute Personal. It sounds like the unit is toast. Any idea how long the new battery will last on the shelf in case one of the others goes bad early? Thanks again for helping.

Unfortunately, the UPS has died already. With regards to your question about the battery, shelf life on batteries as recommended by APC before use in APC UPS products is ? 6 months.

Thanks for the battery references. I gave up on the ES 500 and replaced it with a new ES 550 yesterday. We have good luck with the APC units. (Although we have an old Conext CNB 900 I wish I could set to low sensitivity with PowerChute Plus!)
