APC Back-Ups model ES 450. When the unit is plugged in, but no load, I can turn the power on, and the power LED illuminates. If I plug a load in, then turn it on, the power light illuminates for just a couple seconds and then goes out.
The red light that says "Replace Battery" does not light. I don't want to buy a battery and then find out the device is kaput.
Thanx--doug

Hello Doug McGarrett,
Can you verify what the specific model is from back or bottom of the UPS on the white sticker? We have a few "ES 450 models." That will help me understand the specific UPS to make sense of what you described. Depending on the model/age of the UPS, it may be wise to pursue trading it in via the APC Trade-UPS program for around the same cost as a new battery while receiving a new UPS, new battery, and new three year warranty without worrying about if you bought the right thing. We can talk about that once I know more.

Hi,
Try testing the unit by powering it on with no load and then add load to it. I suggest adding a lamp as the load. Once the lamp is on unplug the UPS from the wall outlet to see if the UPS can sustain the load. If it cannot / the lamp turns off quickly than the battery is most likely the issue and should be replaced. If the lamp stays powered on then the battery should be okay. You should then test to see if the UPS will power up with the lamp already plugged in. If it does not than that would indicate an internal fault and the UPS should be replaced.
