Normally I use a Mac, so I do not have routine access to a machine with an old style serial port. Why APC continues to use these is beyond me.
So I have a PC laptop, that still doesn't have an old serial port. So I bought an adapter - made by APC.
PowerChute will not detect the UPS no matter what USB port I use. It is a Dell D630 running Windows 7.
All I want to do is disable to alarm when the power goes out. The reason being I live in an apartment, and sometimes the power fluctuates in the middle of the night, the unit beeps and it is very annoying.

Hi Justin,
That cable appears to be designed for specific models of UPSes, [see here|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/905/~/windows-98%2F2k%2Fxp-does-not-detect-usb-connect...]. You can usually use any generic USB-Serial converter you happen to have (or borrow one from a friend).
