I need to update the Firmware on our UPS which has two models (SMX2200HV/SMX3000HV) and an NMC AP9630.
I need to do this as the Web interface has stopped working after changing our network switches and another post in this forum suggests that this will fix it.
My issue is that the Front Panel diplay doesn't show the Product ID, using the CLI 'About' command shows for the Application Module - 'Invalid Module Header!' and there doesn't appear to be a card or sticker on/in the UPS with the product ID on it either.
Without the Product ID i can't determine the Firmware required for this UPS and i can't use the Firmware Wizard as i don't have the serial cable.
Can anyone suggest a way around this?
Thanks

At a high level these are some things to consider.
The APC (Firmware) UPS FAQ will guide you as to what firmware applies to your unit. This is first done by referencing the serial number which indicates the manufacturer date. This same information will be displayed on the LCD Menu under (About). This section will call out the current firmware installed on the UPS. This section will also call out the NMC firmware installed.
If the UPS is made before a specific year say 2012 as an example then no firmware is available. This is called out in the APC FAQ as it relates to the SMX, SRT, SMT.
Serial Cable: You’ll need the serial cable either for the NMC or UPS. If you intend to update the UPS firmware. If your intention was to use the NMC webpage to upgrade the UPS you’re playing with fire!
As this isn’t the recommended method to update the UPS. Even though this option is available in the NMC Menu. 🤦♂️
NMC: I’m unclear as to what you’re asking or saying about the NMC. Unless the NMC was flashed with an incorrect firmware that relates to a different model UPS. There would be no impact on it working correctly.
So I’ll rephrase the question as it pertains to the NMC only.
- Web Page: Can you see and access the NMC webpage when the correct IP address is used?
- Ping: Can you ping the assigned IP Address to the NMC?
- NMC LED: What are colours and status of the RJ45 LED’s on the NMC card?
- Firmware: What version of firmware is on the NMC now? 7.1.2 is the latest firmware for the AP9630 / AP9631 NMC.
NOTE: If the UPS is under warranty contact APC Support to guide you in the firmware update process! ☝️ Firmware should only be done to address security, bugs, or to receive feature enhancements. As you have a 50/50 chance of bricking the UPS during the firmware upgrade process. If the UPS is out of warranty and you brick the unit because of doing a firmware update you’re SOL!

I've looked at the APC (Firmware) UPS FAQ but none of the methods to find the Product ID on this UPS.
Which part of the serial number indicates the manufacturer date? Serial number is AS151713131415
Firmware Version shown on the LCD Menu 'About' is 07.4 but no Product ID is shown.
I can connect to the Webpage but get the error message: You are attempting to access a Schneider device. There was a problem loading the application. Please login to the device via telnet for more details.
As i can't get logged in to the Webpage and don't have the serial cable i was planning to use Telnet andyes i know it's not the recommend method. I believe i need the Product ID to be able to find the correct Firmware to use.

Serial Number: Based on the serial number provided the unit was produced in 2015.
Serial Cable: You will need to purchase or make one. Attempting to to upgrade the UPS firmware via the LAN is not recommended by APC. There’s a high likelihood of bricking the unit when updating the UPS firmware.
NMC: I would strongly ask you to contact APC Support to help you identify what the root cause(s) for the NMC Webpage error.
Have you tried default the NMC to a factory state to see if access is restored? If that fails you can format the NMC and this too will restore the unit to a factory default state.
It goes without saying the AP9630 / 9631 NMC must be on the latest firmware. If you’re running on 4.XX / 5.XX NMC firmware you’re playing with fire! The UPS LCD *About* will tell you what firmware is currently on the NMC. The NMC issues obviously need to be resolved before you try to update the UPS firmware.
UPS Firmware: The APC FAQ provides a software / firmware matrix that calls out what is applicable to your unit based on production year and ID.
You can also find this (ID) inside of the main board. There is a white sticker on a chip that calls out the firmware & ID.
Good luck . . . 👍
