CS-650 - Continually says power failure / power back up

I'm trying to set up a CS-650 to protect a CentOS 5.6 server - I've manged to install apcupsd on CentOS and it seems to be communicating with the UPS ok. However, apcaccess gives the following:

APC : 001,046,1190
DATE : 2011-05-25 18:52:11 +0100
HOSTNAME : .co.uk

APCMODEL : Back-UPS CS 650
END APC : 2011-05-25 18:52:12 +0100

The STATUS is incorrect - the UPS is on AC power (this was causing problems before where it would shutdown on AC power when the battery was lower). If I look in the logs I can see it is switching from power failure to power back up every ~5 seconds:

2011-05-25 18:54:19 +0100 Power is back. UPS running on mains.
2011-05-25 18:54:20 +0100 Power failure.
2011-05-25 18:54:24 +0100 Power is back. UPS running on mains.
2011-05-25 18:54:25 +0100 Power failure.
2011-05-25 18:54:29 +0100 Power is back. UPS running on mains.
2011-05-25 18:54:30 +0100 Power failure.
2011-05-25 18:54:34 +0100 Power is back. UPS running on mains.
2011-05-25 18:54:35 +0100 Power failure.
2011-05-25 18:54:39 +0100 Power is back. UPS running on mains.
2011-05-25 18:54:40 +0100 Power failure.

Has anyone got any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance,E

Hi,

The UPS itself seems ok - it just seems to be the logs / status report - both coming from apcupsd I guess.

ahh ok. i am not that familiar in troubleshooting apcupsd (since its not made by APC) so you may want to check with their support system to make sure there isnt an issue with this OS or anything if the UPS is not actually switching to battery. from googling, i thought we might also see a UPS running on batteries event too if the UPS thought it was on battery. i spent a little time trying to look through apcupsd support website/release notes and googling but i could not find anything concrete for you ๐Ÿ˜ž

Manged to solve my problem using the instructions here:

Link: [http://osdir.com/ml/sysutils.apcupsd.user/2007-02/msg00028.html]

From what I can work out the UPS supplies feature reports and input reports? The apcupsd prefers the feature reports over the input reports - mine seemed to have some issues with the feature reports, yet input reports were ok? Rebuilding apcupsd using the instructions above solved the problem.

Hi!

I have the exact same problem here with the same CentOS version. Unfortunately, the link you mentionend is offline. Would you be so kind to tell me what you did to resolve the problem?

Best regards

Johann

The link appears to be back up, but basically:

Download the apcupsd source code
Edit the src/drivers/usb/linux/linux-usb.c file - "At the very top of the "pusb_ups_get_capabilities"
function, around line 687, there is an array called "rtype[]" which
lists HID_REPORT_TYPE_FEATURE and HID_REPORT_TYPE_INPUT. Just swap the
order of those two constants so INPUT comes first." <-- taken from the page I linked to
Then configure & make apcupsd

Hope this helps.
