Will my UPS still protect my equipment from power surges without the battery? I'm assuming the battery is just for backup purposes to keep the equipment running in case of a power outage. Am I thinking correctly?

yes, that is true. if the power goes out, the UPS will turn off and there will be no battery back up. surge protection does not reply on the battery.
