Today I found that my Backups XS 1500 was beeping and all loads were shutdown. I tried cycling the unit but it would not come on. So I replaced the batteries figuring that was the problem but when I reconnected the UPS to power it still refuses to turn on. I tried removing all loads and got same result. I hear a beep and what sounds like a relay rapidly cycling on/off and then it goes to battery power (yellow light). I checked the wall outlet with another piece of equipment and the wall outlet works fine. I tried 'brain-deading' the unit but no change. Any ideas?

The circuit breaker on the back of the unit was not tripped. I tried to get the unit to work as you describe by holding button and then releasing during beep but when I press the button there is no long beep. Only after some time then all four lights start flashing and all I can set there is the sensitivity which I've set to Low. So did my unit die on me? How can I tell if it is still in warranty?
UPDATE: I found the serial number and plugged it in the warranty check and it looks like its out of warranty by a couple years. So what is my least expensive option here?

Hey Gerry,
If possible, try to power up the unit without attaching it to the wall by pressing the Power on button until you hear two beeps. If it does not work, I would recommend you to trade in your old unit to a new unit.
The APC Trade-UPS Program gives you:
* Up to a 25% discount on new APC UPS(s)
* The APC Trade-UPS program* is a cost-effective way to upgrade your existing units and protect your latest investment. Trade in any UPS, regardless of its manufacturer or its working condition, for the latest APC UPS technology and receive up to a 25% discount on your new purchase.
* Up to a 25% discount on APC accessories. As a benefit to our customers, now you can also buy additional APC accessories at a significant discount, if purchased along with your Trade-UPS.
* Upgrade to four times the VA of your current UPS capacity. Trade in up to 4X the VA of your current UPS capacity or trade in two UPSs for one larger unit.
* Up to a 2 or 3 year factory warranty on new units.
* Free removal and/or shipping of existing units. Order new units today and receive free return shipping of your retired units back to APC. APC will also pay to have larger UPSs picked up and returned.* *Applicable only to defined easy access areas.
* Proper ecological disposal of returned UPSs and batteries for free. All old units, including hazardous UPS batteries, returned to APC will then be properly and ecologically disposed of according to Environmental Protection Agency standards (a $5 to $500 value depending on the UPS).
You will need to first size which UPS is suitable for your current need. Then, process your order with a credit card from the online trade ups commerce page below.

Once you get the new unit, you can swap out the old one, package the old ups in the same box the new one came in. Just use the prepaid UPS shipping label to pay for shipping of the return unit so you don't have to incur any further costs. It's as simple as that!
Have a nice day!
