Recently my ES700G has started reporting electrical noise and as it does this, the alarm sounds continually and shows no LEDs. Then it settles into normal behaviour again for a few days and then repeats the odd activity.
This afternoon when I returned from work the computer were off, despite us having had no power outage. The Backup ES700G was off. When I pressed the master "on" button it came on for a moment and then switched off again. Power was being supplied through the surge protected bank but not the UPS bank.
Does this suggest I simply need a new battery, or is the unit itself faulty? Any ideas? I posted a message to APC technical support using the Concat APC facility to do so in the PowerChute software but I have had no reply. Serial number is 5B1238T07705

Hello Adrian,
I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Back-UPS.
From what you are describing, there could be an issue with the UPS itself. Since the UPS is turning off without a power outage (or basically having no battery backup) then the UPS is probably the issue. Furthermore, the fact that the UPS will turn on and then quickly turn off, is another indication. Without a good battery, the UPS would not turn on as well.
That being said, I would recommend calling into our sales team at 800 800 4272. We have a great program called TradeUps, where we might be able to get you a new unit for little more than the cost of a replacement battery.
Thanks,
Shanon

Your UPS was manufactured in the 38th week of 2012. If the factory-installed battery is still in place, it is entirely possible that the battery could be worn out. A warning alarm to indicate a failed battery does exist in these units, but it may not sound with some types of battery fault. A failed battery can cause a sudden power off of the unit.
Unlike a power outage or persistently low or high line voltage, "noise" on the power line isn't easily detected with conventional measurement equipment. The UPS might be working properly (these small units have only the option to switch on their inverter and run from battery in the face of any issue with the incoming electrical power), but it is hard to be 100% sure of that with the "nebulous" concept of noise on the power line.
The easiest test would perhaps be to take the unit to another location with known good AC line power and try it there. If the battery is in fact bad, it may fail the self test, but it should produce a constant alarm indicating such and remain powered on. (Removing the battery should also cause an alarm to sound if the unit is turned on.)

Thank you. I don't have access to a clean AC supply. But the most recent problem was that the whole unit would not remain powered on when switched on. Is this the same as failing the self-test?
