Hi, I've had my BackUPS Pro 1500 for 8 months now, and it occasionally has had random occurences of a strange bad odor coming from the top vent area toward the front, accompanied with warm to the touch around the same general area. The fan is not on, and I have never actually heard it kick in like I have with my other unit. I had to turn the circuit that it was plugged into off in order to unplug it while my system stayed on, and changed the outlet to make room for another plug. It was only unplugged for about 45 seconds, at around 180W load. Should the fan have kicked in, and could that have to do with the warmth I am feeling, and even possibly the smell?
My infrared thermometer is reading a maximum 120F (48.8C) temperature radiating from the top of the unit.
Thanks.

Hi Jacob,
Yes, at a minimum I would expect the fan to come on when the UPS goes to battery. I am not sure what the internal temperature threshold is for this particular unit to kick the fan on.
I would make sure that there is nothing caught in the fan preventing it from spinning and make sure there is no dust in it (which in 8 months in your typical enviromment, I can't imagine it is that bad) but from there, then you could pursue a warranty replacement.
