Back-Ups ES 700 - Frequent Deep Cycling?

Hi,

How many cycles can I expect when discharging an ES700VA down to 20% every 2-3 days, and plugging it back to the grid in between.

Power during discharging is about 20W, temp is about 15°C.

Thanks

Thank's a lot for your detailed answer!

200 cycles sounds pretty good, I'll be using it only half of the year, 3 times a week, so it should be good for about 2 years.

Degraded capacity / depth of discharge during that period shouldn't be a problem: I checked again and it's more around 10 to 15 watts that I need.

When I monitor the state of charge it says 30 minutes autonomy but it actually lasts hours: tested 2+ hours and still wasn't empty.

I'll typically be using it 60 to 90minutes, maybe 2 hours occasionally.

Cheers

This will be very hard on the battery. Still, somewhere around 200 cycles, maybe a few more, should be pretty doable.

The CSB HR1234W battery is a common model distributed by APC, and while it may not be the exact battery used in a Back-UPS ES700, it should be similar enough to draw valid conclusions. CSB claims that more than 260 cycles can be expected over the battery's useful life.

Each of those cycles will have a shorter lifetime than the last as the battery wears out, so the last few may not offer as much productive use as earlier cycles.

Quality of the battery used will factor in as well. The CSB batteries are generally well regarded. A battery from a different manufacturer, especially a generic one, may not last for anywhere near as many cycles. (Although it has been my experience that a lot of them last every bit as well in the more typical standby usage scenario.)

It will also take a minimum of about eight hours for the battery to recharge after AC power is restored to the UPS. You can charge it faster, but doing so will also eat into the number of useful cycles.
