I have the Back-UPS XS 900 purchased about 4 month ago and today it did something very strange. It started flipping from "On Line" to "On Battery" and back again. It did this for a few minutes while I tried to shut down my workstation. Before I could successfully shut down I lost all power including backup.
Just did the flip-flop again while I was typing.
Back up is less than 6 months old - my last APC lasted nearly 4 years and never did any odd behavior like this.
I'm only running a DELL 390 Workstation, Monitor, and Printer off this backup.

ok well what i would do is reset the unit and observe. it may be a good idea to observe with no load attached to it and no data cable just to see what it does and make sure something else isnt causing it.
to reset it, power off and remove the attached load, including the USB data cable and then turn the UPS itself off. remove the AC power plug from the wall. disconnect the battery from the unit and then hold down the power button for 10 seconds. then, reconnect the battery and reconnect AC power to the wall. turn the UPS on and see what it does. if it doesnt do anything for a while then maybe reconnect everything one by one - like the USB data cable and the PC. i have seen strange things with a broken data cable so that is why i recommend doing things in this order.
if no luck, i'd pursue a replacement whether its under warranty via APC or if you have to buy one.

Hi, Trilogic
There is also a posibility that the sensitivity of the unit has been set incorrectly. I have encountered such cases in my region here ( Asia ) and usually setting the sensitivity of the unit to its incoming power will resolve this issue.. Please do refer to the user manual on how to.
Thanks and hope the above info helps..

what types of noises was it making? did it stop by itself or did you have to reboot the unit yourself to clear the condition?

It does the same click-click as when it is switching over from On Line to battery backup and the lights on the front indicate as much.
None of the other computers in the home (none of which have power backup) are bothered by the power in the home, neither do the lights even so much as flicker.
It seems the APC just flips to battery backup and back again for no reason - then after a bit of that business it goes dark completely - then it starts itself back up. Of course my workstation goes completely dead when this happens.
