Back-UPS RS 800, appears to randomly go to battery for 1-2 seconds, then back to normal; does not appear to be any other power problems in the home during this; and it doesn't happen all the time; any suggestions on what my problem might be?
Will connecting the data cable and running the APC UPS software help to ID what the problem might be?

Yes, PowerChute Personal Edition could help you. Just because you don't see a power problem though doesn't mean there really isn't one the UPS can see. If it bothers you that it is switching, within the software, you could lower the UPS's sensitivity setting. I think the default is high.
