Back-UPS RS 800 Overload

Hello,

I have been using this UPS since 2005. I haven't had any problems with it until yesterday when the power suddenly cut out on the battery backup side, overload light came on, and a continuous alarm turned on. Electronics connected to the surge protection only side worked fine and didn't experience a loss of power, but CPU and monitor suddenly turned off. I turned the unit off, turned it back on, it cycled and showed normal status. I turned my monitor and CPU back on, ran smart chute, everything seemed to be okay (battery showed 100% charged, load was only around 250), ran self-test and about halfway through self-test the CPU and monitor turned off, overload light came on, and continuous alarm rang again. I turned off the UPS, switched the monitor and CPU from battery side to surge protector side (nothing else plugged in on battery side), pushed the reset button in the back, turned on the UPS, turned on the CPU and monitor, ran smartchute self test again, again around 50% the "replace battery" light turned on but no alarm sound.

Is this a bad battery needing replacement or does the entire unit need to be replaced? I always imagined battery failure would be akin to rechargeable batteries in small electronics (slowly decreasing amount of battery time) rather than sudden failure.

I know I purchased the original unit 3/05 and I think I replaced the battery before, though I can't find the receipt for the battery swap out so I'm not sure.

Hi, i had the same problem twice...!!!
My battery was ok, everything was ok but
the beep keep going on, for overload...
Both times i fixed doing these steps...

- Turn off the unit
- Flip over the unit
- Open the battery-cap and turn the power on
- Green Light is flashing
- Try Now (with the green light flashing) to disconnect the battery...
- Now it should be ON with the Empty battery light on (Red light)
- Connect again the battery as it is...

Now it should be ok...!!!

Good Luck...

Hello Wender Hwang, welcome to the APC Forum,

Based from what you have explained on your post the UPS that you have shows a sign of battery failure. The unit exhibits what we call as Overload, which means that the UPS/Battery was not able to support the load attached to it due to a low battery capacity or the battery not working properly.

Our UPS performs a self-test from the time you turned it on and repeats every 14 days, the unit switches from Online to OnBattery whenever this is done or initiated. When the UPS goes on a self-test the battery is being checked on different circumstances: (1) Battery Disconnected Test, (2) Low Battery Capacity, (3) Good Battery and (4) Dead Battery. During these tests if the battery fails the replace battery LED will lit up depending on the result, if there is a bad battery it's lit up solid and flashing if it encounters a disconnected battery. We always inform our customer that prior to doing a self-test, important and or critical loads attached to the UPS be removed and or reconnected on a different power source since a failed self-test/bad battery can turn off the battery backup side and this is what might be happening on your end.

Have you tried running a self-test without nothing connected on the UPS? If you haven't done it yet I recommend doing this without any load and instruct the UPS to perform a self-test either manually or using the software. Please let us know if there's any changes on your UPS.

This is an abnormal behavior of the UPS operation. It appears that there is an internal fault with the UPS circuitry. The replacement battery will not fix the issue. This unit came with two year warranty from the date of purchase or by serial number. So this unit would not be covered under warranty. You may participate in the APC Trade UPS program to trade in your unit to a new unit. Click here to know more about trade UPS program.
