I have just replaced the batteries in the aforementioned ups and it is telling me that the battery is disconnected. I am absolutely certain the polarity is correct, am getting 25.5v at the battery pack terminals. I even made a cable that ran from the battery pack terminals to the input terminals inside the unit and measured that 25.5v is getting to the input of the unit. However, it beeps and powerchute says the battery is disconnected.
Any suggestions?

I would suggest safely powering off the load attached to the UPS, turning the UPS itself off and unplugging it from the wall. Once you've done that, disconnect and remove the batteries.
Depress the power button for a few seconds. The UPS may beep or try to start up and immediately shut down. Wait about 30 seconds before reinstalling and reconnecting the batteries. Plug the unit back in and see if it is functioning properly. Sometimes they do get confused.
If the problem persists, you're probably dealing with an internal fault and the UPS should be replaced. (APC's official stance is that these units aren't end-user repairable, and it can definitely be dangerous to work on them due to the voltages and currents involved. Unless you understand the risk and are willing to bear the entire responsibility no matter the result, do not attempt to service the UPS!)
