Back UPS RS 1500 with RS / XS battery pack

Can i replace the batteries on the RS 1500 and leave the second battery pack tower RS / XS unplugged? How will this effect my capacity? I've seen these as stand alone units but i want to be sure. My RS / XS unit doesn't seem to come apart easily and is swollen from the batteries inside.

Thanks,

Thomas

Absolutely. As there are four batteries in the expansion pack and two in the UPS itself, I would make a rough estimate that you will lose about 2/3rds of the run time.

I'm not sure why APC  made the decision to close up the RS/XS battery expansion pack as they did. The hardest part of disassembling one of these packs is getting the front and rear panels off. They're held in place by very stout plastic clips. Once those are off, getting the actual case apart is easy. It's held together by three screws on each end. Make a note of how all the wiring goes and work very carefully -- there is a lot of electrical energy available. As with any other UPS battery replacement, you'll definitely want to remove any watches, rings or other jewelry  from your hands before you begin.
