Back-UPS Pro 1000 Dies!

We just bought a new Back-UPS Pro 1000 from our local Office Depot. This UPS is connected to my Desktop Dell, Flat Screen Monitor and Sound Speakers. A total load of 21% average. The UPS ran well for about a week when we heard a bunch of clicking noises and after a bit a number of beep-beeps. The Dell died mid use. We looked at the display on the UPS and it said the battery was 0% and kept beeping. Our 120vac was live and had not dropped out at any time. We don't know how long the clicking was. The beeping started right when the UPS died.
The day before this happened we plugged this UPS in to a brand new outlet strip with surge protection. It was tough to plug the UPS in directly to the outlet behind the desk. When we plugged the UPS in that new outlet strip, we heard a pop and the breaker tripped in the house. The outlet strip was a dead short at the plug end. That outlet worked before we plugged the UPS in. We then plugged the UPS back into the wall outlet and it was fine. We returned the outlet and never used any other outlet. Even after that the UPS seemed to work great for a day until the clicking and died. I took the battery pack out and re-inserted it again. The UPS recharged the battery to 100% and it seemed to run. Because we did not trust it, we took it back to Office Depot and replaced it with the same model UPS. We hope this was a one time problem.
After hearing all of the info... Any ideas on the cause of the UPS dying?
Could the UPS cause the surge protected outlet to short out? WHY?
Could the bad surge protected outlet have caused the UPS to die out a day later? WHY?
Has anyone else had a similar problem?
The replaced UPS is still running after 24 hours.
What do you think????

Nope... The battery was turned over and inserted into the proper orientation. It charged up ok and looked good until the time it went to backup (both times). As I said before, we reinserted the battery back in and waited for the complete charge. For the last week now it's been working great. I don't get it. I hope it all stays that way.

Well..... Here we are again...
The same problem again....
Today the same UPS was running great for around 1.5 weeks until the UPS started to beep beep AGAIN. It's a fast two beeps and the two beeps are about a second apart. BTW the manual doesn't say anything about a double beep one second apart. The battery shows fully charged. The display says its online with 118 volts. Not battery mode. We tried to reset it. Tried turning it off and back on. Still beep beep and it's online. Turned it off for about 7 hours with nothing connected. After 7 hours of off time and nothing connected to it, we turned it back on. The battery is now almost drained!!! Still no load, nothing connected and it was off! It's now on and it seems to be recharging! Now the only thing we remember that may have something to do with it is, two days ago we lost power and the UPS did what it should. It keep the computer up and running until we shut it down a few minutes later. Power came back after about 15 minutes. It's been running great until today's trouble.
Any ideas on what the heck is going on with this? I don't get it at all. Has anyone ever heard about this problem or what the two beep beeps mean?

Thanks Much.
I just received a call from my wife that the same model replacement UPS is now beeping and draining the battery. Same as before! About the same number of days before it dies out! The power to the outlet is there but the UPS will not come out of battery backup mode. What the heck! I will need to bring this one back also! We are not using it in any way different than anyone else. I'm lost. I've always liked APC.

One more bit of info....
After the beeping and the UPS stays in battery backup mode we turn it back off. Pull the battery pack out and plug the battery pack back in. Turn on the UPS and it starts charging the battery back up and it works ok. I don't know for how long though. It may die again in a hour or a day. Who knows.
It's weird I'm the only guy this happens too.

Yep.
2 short beeps then about 2-3 seconds between beeps. It did this until it finally dies 20-30 minutes later. This was the first one.
The second one has the same 2 beeps 2-3 seconds between beeps. This time my wife was there and noticed the beeps when it started. The battery was full but it had switched over to battery backup. The outlet was active.
