Back-UPS NS 1500M2 - Flashing overload

I have been using a Back-UPS NS 1500M2 for quite a while and recently, I started seeing the overload icon flash on the UPS. It would come on, flash for ~30 seconds, then the display goes off.  The UPS work fine.

I then run the PowerChute Personal Edition (rev 3.1.0) and it says that my current load is around 28% (see image). This stays at this level even when the overload icon flashes

So ...what am I missing here?

  • The PowerChute app says that the battery is at 100% and that I am far away from the overload condition.
  • I ran the self-test with no errors noted

PROBLEM SOLVED

I wanted to share the cause and solution in case someone else sees this.

My hobby is amateur radio and I just noticed that the odd overload notice was happening when my nearby HF radio was transmitting.

The overload was NOT caused by excessive power drain BUT by RF (Radio Frequency) interference being picked up by the USB cable that connects it to the computer.

I wrapped the USB cable through a ferrite choke and the problem disappeared.

Amateur radio people will know how to do this 🙂
