Back-UPS LS 700

I have had this device for a while and it worked flawlessly until last week, when it intermittently started indicating that the power has gone off. However, there was no power loss or even brown out. I know this because the ES 750 (same circuit) and XS 1500 (different circuit) do not show any problems. The first few times it happened I just muted it and put the computer to sleep. The third or forth time it ran down and indicated that the battery was run down, nonstop chirping. Turning it off for a few minutes stopped the chirping and then allowed it to be turned back on. After that, I swopped the 700 with the 750, since that computer uses less power and had less peripherals. Then, I ran an extension cord to another circuit. None of these things have helped.

My first thought was that it had to do with needing a new battery, but neither new battery indicator is active (chirp pattern, at regular intervals, or red LED). The surge only side continues to work, even when turned off. Letting it sit off for a few minutes lets it be restarted, it then runs fine for a few hours, though the time interval is getting shorter.

I'm hoping that it's just a matter of replacing the battery, but I don't want to needlessly get a replacement battery. Is the device functioning correctly or is there a way for me to test it?

It now won't turn on. When i try to turn it on, it just chirps for as long as I push/hold the on button down.

Alex,

That indication is the automatic self-test which is run by default, on all APC UPS's upon startup. The relay that you heard is the transfer switch between online and on battery.

Does the PowerChute Personal Edition software have any information in the Summary Page as to why the UPS is running off battery power?

Try also lowering the sensitivity through the software, make sure that the UPS has a threshold that can accept possibly distorted input power.

I just got it to turn on again.

After hitting the ON/test (mute) button. The "On Battery" LED (orange) staid active for about 5 seconds, while the "On Line" LED (green) flashed. During that there was a two parted click, it almost sounded like an internal switch was turned off and then back on. Both LEDs were on for about a second. The orange LED went off, while the green staid on; no noises since the last LED change.

Is the software installed? Is there any notification of a utility power problem that is forcing the UPS to transfer to battery? Most of the time, because the UPS is at high sensitivity, something like Harmonic Distortion (electrical noise) will force the UPS on battery, but other machinery will operate as normal, receiving these excess harmonics. If the software is not installed, I would recommend installing it just to monitor the input power.

Thanks for the information about the self-test at start, but what about it randomly going to battery until the battery is empty and then having to be turned off? Is this a sign that the battery needs replaced, though neither the red LED or audible indicator are active?
