Hi,
I have a 4-year old UPS (Back UPS ES 700) which I now only use for the second PSU in one of my servers (my main UPS is now a APC Back UPS Pro 1500). Last week, I powered-down the Back UPS ES 700, and disconnected it's lead from the wall outlet. I did this as I was re-locating the unit. When I went to plug the unit back in, I noticed that there was a strange sound emitting from the unit (a sort of crackling electrical sound). The unit then began to randomly switch between live / battery, where it then emitted a continuous tone. I found that this was the overload alarm, so I disconnected everything from the unit (it was the same load as previously - one server). I alarm didn't stop, so I turned the unit off. I then waited a second, where I then turned the unit back on. It then done the random switching again - live / battery and then the overload alarm started (with no load, nothing attached).
I have removed the battery and held down the power button for 5 seconds, and then re-connected the battery. This hasn't helped, and the problem is still occurring. I have also removed the battery and left for over 24 hours, and then re-attached... but this also hasn't resolved the problem unfortunately. Is it the battery which needs replaced, or is the unit itself dead?
Greatly appreciate any help in which I can get on this, I don't really want to buy a new battery unless I'm confident that this is a battery problem.
Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,
The Constant Tone you observed from the unit could mean one of three things; Overload, Battery Disconnected or Internal Fault. Taking the "crackling electrical sound" into consideration, I would have to say the issue is most likely due to an internal fault. It's hard to say exactly what may have happen and unfortunately at this point, I would suggest a complete replacement of the UPS.
