Hi,
Can anyone help with this problem?
I have a Back-UPS 500 connected to my iMac 21.5 and nothing else, no software monitoring, just power supply.
We've had a few minor power interruptions recently, only a few seconds at a time and the UPS has coped fine.
However the last interruption (of a few seconds) resulted in a Fatal Crash - meaning the computer was still being powered, but I got the Black box on the screen saying I must shut down and restart.
What could cause this? Could it be that the battery is failing (3-4 years old) and not quite enough voltage is being supplied causing the iMac to crash but still being powered?
I don't want to test it again for fear of damaging my Mac.
Any advice welcome and thanks in advance.
Max

...it could be hardware related I see mention of a "page fault" which could indicate a loose or defective RAM memory module. If the iMac Power supply had a slight dip in output during the transition of the UPS to battery it could cause a marginal electrical connection - eg to the memory on your iMac's mainboard - to show itself....You could try removing and re-inserting your memory sticks first ?
*Note: Memory replacement on the iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012) and iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013) is not user-removable and must be done by an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
...could also be related to 3rd party drivers: You could try removing these drivers, one at a time, and see if the panic re-occurs.

Can you clarify - you said no software monitoring - does that mean that you also do not have a USB cable connected between the UPS and the iMac? Because there is the option for the APC PowerChute and then native support within Mac OS so I just wanted to clarify that you meant neither are actively running and the USB cable is completely disconnected even if you are not using those tools.
Is there an event log within Mac OS you could look at to see why it logged a crash? This is difficult to say for sure, especially if it's been working fine for a long time. Either way, I don't think it is related to the battery in the UPS (just yet). It could've just been a coincidence too. If there is no data cable connected between the UPS and iMac, then I also don't see how this would be anything beyond an issue perhaps with the transfer time of the UPS to battery or an issue the iMac has with the step approximated sinewave that the UPS outputs while on battery but I am skeptical because if it was working fine for years, it doesn't make sense to me that a problem of this type developed over time.
My thought is to somehow test the battery back up operation. If you don't want to test it with the Mac again, you could at least verify it's basic operation with something like a lamp or similar to see what happens.

Hi, Thanks for your reply,
I've no software or USB attached, it is just simply a power back-up connection.
When the power interruption occurred the crash happened at the EXACT same time, hence why I thought the iMac might have detected a change in power supply and caused a kernel panic?
I did find a Log and pasted it is pasted in below if it is any help - I don't really know what I am looking at?
