BX1500M-LM60 connected to a USB HUB.... should it work?

Hello !!!

I just bought a UPS BX1500M-LM60 and need to connect the USB cable coming out of the UPS to a USB HUB (self powered) in order to connect 3 Synology servers to this UPS unit.

I tried connecting the USB cable coming from the UPS through the USB HUB and did not work. I mean the server that I had connected directly to the UPS using the APC supplied cable (RJ45 on one end and USB 2.0 on the other end) could not get info from the UPS, if connected through the USB HUB. The server can get info from the UPS only if connected directly to the UPS.

Has anyone had success connecting a UPS like this one or very similar to a USB HUB and from the USB HUB to two or more devices? PCs, Laptops, Synology Servers?

Thank you in advance for you valuable time responding to the. STAY Healthy !!!!

Cheers,

Ed

Hi,

The USB protocol does not allow for UPS connection to multiple systems. To power off multiple system you can connect the UPS to a single Windows PC running PowerChute Personal Edition. The write a shutdown script that will be triggered using task scheduler. When the script is run it would tell the other systems to power off.

Thank you Bill,

I don't know if it would work; why? because each Synology server is connected to a different ISP (Internet Service Provider).

I guess if all servers would be connected to the same ISP i.e. same LAN, it could work, but this is not the case.

To me a USB HUB is a device that receives data as input and sends the same data to all outputs. Only the incumbent device will act upon it. The others will ignore it, assuming others are different devices, like a scanner, a printer, an external USB drive.

In my case all servers can listen and act upon the data received because their OS (Operating System) is prepared to receive data from a UPS and act upon it.

So I don't understand why the data outgoing from the UPS cannot be "heard" by all servers by means of using a USB HUB.

Best regards, Ed

USB is a "single master to many slaves" protocol. The UPS is a slave, the PC is a master. The PC polls the UPS for data, the UPS does not send any data in an unsolicited manner.
