I was wondering if the BX1300G runs in bypass mode until the power is cut then switches to the batteries, or if it runs off of the batteries constantly.
Or I might not be understanding how a UPS works at all. Please help.

The BX1300G is a line interactive UPS. Review [this link|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/SADE-5TNM3Y_R5_EN.pdf] for the different types of UPS systems. It technically doesn't have a bypass feature. It passes utility power through, boosting it or trimming it (if the particular UPS has that feature) and then switches to battery it need be.
hope that helps.
