BR800 - after green self test, chrips in an irregular pattern continuously

Hello,

I have two Back-UPS RS 800 units in service for approximately 4 years.

One of them started chirping every few hours, it seemed, then every hour, then it got closer together. I assumed it had failed a test so I shut the unit down and restarted it. The battery diagnostic IMMEDIATELY failed and went red.

So I ordered a battery and replaced it.

Here is where I am confused -- I let the battery charge overnight, I turn the unit on, and the diagnostic succeeds. Green light.

The unit then proceeds in an irregular pattern (once every few seconds, then maybe not for 8 minutes, then every 2 minutes, etcetera) to quickfly flip on and off battery and chirp once.

There is no power fluctuation that I know of in the room -- which has another Back UPS RS 800 which is not complaining. I tried swapping the two units to see if maybe the outlet was providing bad power, but the symptoms remained (one fine, one not).

Any ideas?

hmm definitely sounds strange.

try doing the following:

1 Disconnect any attached load.
2 Unplug the UPS from the wall socket.
3 Disconnect the UPS' internal battery.
4 Push and hold the "On" button on the UPS for 5 seconds
5 Reconnect internal battery.
6. Plug UPS in to known good power source.
7: Turn UPS on.

let us know if it still does the same thing after doing the steps above.

It still does the same thing. If anything it's doing it more rapidly? Could just be random chance. Powered on it almost continually cycles, chirping once each time.

Without power (AC or battery) holding the button had no noticeable effect.

ok so you are positive it is the amber ON BATTERY LED - meaning the UPS is possibly cycling between online and on battery?

chirping usually happens in conjunction with the replace battery LED so I just want to be sure. replace battery is the fourth LED down on the front panel if its hard to see.

Absolutely -- it is cycling from the top and second most top lights, the short beep (or chirp) occurs when it's coming back from the on battery light to the power light -- I think, it's rather quick. I hear it accessing the battery -- that sort of mechanical click sound. It's very brief.

After I posted that last message I left it on for awhile, the chirps became less continuous. When it first powered on, flip, flip, flip, flip, then it went for a few minutes, then flip, then a minute, then flip, flip, then it was like 10 minutes, flip.

each flip had a chirp 😞

This morning I tried replacing the original battery just for giggles as I had not sent it off yet. It behaved the same, except after a few minutes when I held power for a test it failed the battery and lit replace. So I put the new battery back in. Still chirping. 😛

Would low sensitivity enable it to still provide backup power for , say, a computer setup? Manual implied that low sensitivity was bad for this.

no, it will be fine. i mean sensitivity just affects how sensitive the UPS is to electrical noise, etc rather than letting it pass through to your computer.

an average computer would be fine on low sensitivity in my opinion. i just wanted you to adjust it to see if that was the issue so you dont have to do that with the computer connected.

no problem. but if it starts clicking again, then that must mean you are starting to have an electrical noise issue that needs to be looked at in your location. glad to be of help.

Happy to report that setting sensitivity to "low" has apparently resolved the issue -- and still seemed to provide power to the system. 🙂

Other unit is still on medium, or factory default.

yeah i am not sure what is causing it. as long as the sensitivity is set to low, thats all i got 😞
