Hi!
I received my Back Ups Pro 1500 today, brand new. I had previously read a lot about the incredibly loud fans that stay on for hours, etc etc etc.
Well, I am hereby asking the community wether my unit could be defective:
The fan has not come on at all yet while charging. When I unplug the unit from the wall, thereby simulating a power failure, the fan comes on, but no sooner do I plug the device back in, the fan switches off.
My concern is the amount of heat I can feel coming out of the grills on the top of the unit - should the fan not kick in? I heard something somewhere about the fan supposedly running during charging, and once on, for a minimum length of 3 hours. Is this no longer the case? Could my unit overheat, or has it got protection against overheating?

Hi sunnyville, for these back ups pro units the fan will turn on for one of two reasons. The first is if unit is running on battery, and the second is if the unit is using its AVR functionality (boosting or trimming voltage). If the unit is not performing one of these functions, then that fan should not be running. It is possible that if a unit is placed in an environment with fluctuating voltage (i.e. the voltage swings high or low causing the AVR to kick in), that the fan would run for long periods time depending upon how long the voltage is "out of tolerance". This can usually be alleviated by changing the sensitivity of the unit to allow for a wider range of acceptable voltage (thereby stopping the unit from using its AVR function). Hope this helps.
